<description>🔐 Learn about finance with us in a simple, free, and straight-to-the-point way: https://www.visualfaktory.com/free-gift/ Microsoft has just offered some 60,000 employees, about a quarter of its workforce, a voluntary buyout, and it justifies the move with AI. It is not a company in crisis: this year it expects to spend around $190 billion, mostly on AI. Meanwhile the experts can't agree. In May, OpenAI's Sam Altman admitted he had been wrong about how many entry-level office jobs would already be gone, while in October the IMF's Kristalina Georgieva warned of a "slow-moving tsunami" for jobs. According to METR, the longest task the best AI models can complete has gone from just over 2 hours in August 2025 to about 16 hours in May 2026. And yet, a decade after Geoffrey Hinton said we should stop training radiologists, US radiologists earn an average of $571,000 and there are thousands of unfilled positions. A study by economists working with Anthropic sketches three futures for 2030 and finds that, until 2027, we can't know which one we are in. In the most extreme scenario, almost one in five office workers would be unemployed. McKinsey estimates that by 2035 AI will no longer need some 36 million US jobs, while growth will create about 40 million, but around 11 million workers will have to change careers. In this video we look at which jobs will lose value and which will gain it, why office wages could fall while electricians and builders earn more, and why the real problem may be the share of wealth that goes to wages.
