<description>🔐 Learn about finance with us in a simple, free, and straight-to-the-point way: https://www.visualfaktory.com/free-gift/ On October 9, Ethiopia and Eritrea accused each other of starting a war. Ethiopia, with about 135 million people, is the most populous landlocked country in the world, and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed calls access to the Red Sea "an existential question". Eritrea's President Isaias Afwerki hears war drums every time he mentions the port of Assab. Since fighting in Tigray broke out again on September 23, Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of arming the rebels and sending troops up to 60 km into its territory, and the conflict monitor ACLED has documented Eritrean soldiers crossing the border near Zalambessa. But Assab is only the first knot. Egypt, which gets around 97% of its water from the Nile, has been encircling Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam: a pact with Somalia, military facilities in Eritrea and support for Sudan's army. In early October, Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea and Somalia signalled a new regional alliance. And in Sudan, where 14 million people have fled their homes, the two blocs are already fighting through proxies: Egypt and Saudi Arabia back the army, while the UAE, Abiy's great ally, is accused of backing the rival militia. In this video we look at how a war between Ethiopia and Eritrea could drag in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Israel, and what it would mean for the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Suez Canal, the route that links Asia's factories with Europe's ports.
